First Impressions:

The Cabela's Salt Striker rod has a nice semi-gloss black finish with a simple thread wrapping to accent the bright logo decals. The 10 inch long rear and 3 inch front cork handles were of good quality. The line guides are constructed of single footed aluminum oxide and the reel seat is graphite . The rod felt light in weight and balanced well with the Cabela's SS50 Salt Striker spinning reel. The overall weight of the rod and reel combo is particularly important when making 100 or more casts an outing. The fast action rod blank is ideal for casting distance, powerful hook sets, and getting good action transmitted to hard baits.

On the Water:

As a professional charter guide the equipment that I purchase and outfit my boat with must perform at a high level. The last thing I want to have happen is a client hooked up on a great fish and have the gear break down losing the fish. So, before I release equipment to be used on a regular basis, I put it through its paces. My first outing with the ISS764 was fishing to to a large school of 10-15# bluefish. I chose to cast top water hard baits(2-3 oz sizes) at the hard charging bluefish. When you are in the middle of a school of feeding fish (besides catching them) you think of casting distance, rod sensitivity and, hook setting power. I found the rod to cast well given the 7.5 foot length and the fast action taper transmitted quick, responsive tip action to the bait. Bluefish are a hard hitting, toothy game fish that slam into baits with speed and power. Getting power into the hook set is dependant on your own responsivness as much as the power characteristics of the rod. The ISS764 performed well. On our next outing, the rod was used to troll live bait for Stripers. On the first pass around a shoal, my client had a large striper come up and take the bait. My client set the hook and held on as the brute took off on a 70 yd run. Fifteen minutes later, we had the 30# fish in the boat for a photo, and quick release. The ISS764 performance was good, the action and power of the rod were strong as well forgiving enough to allow my client to land the trophy.
