Maritime Skiffs combine traditional New England looks with modern construction techniques and state-of-the-art bottom designs. These wide-beamed, unsinkable boats are easily maintained, operate efficiently with low-to-moderate-sized engines, and are convenient to rig and service.
All Maritime Skiffs have a unique hull design. The bottom has all the sea-keeping features of offshore fishing boats, including spray deflecting lift strakes, wide chines, and a variable deadrise bottom. As a result, they run very flat, keeping the bow in the water, and have proven to be exceptionally seaworthy due to their rounded bows and curved transoms.
A host of options are available at time of order, or can be retrofitted at a later time. The 1890 planes with only 40 HP, and does over 40 MPH with a 90. The most common power is 70 HP, combining very good performance with fuel efficiency.

Review:
Over my many years of saltwater fishing I have owned or used various boats, some center consoles while others were smaller skiff types and others were open windshield forward designs. All of these boats provided many features that allowed for various types of fishing; from trolling in the rips at the mouth of the Merrimack River, drifting the shallows of the estuary, to running and gunning along the beach.
When I decided to concentrate more on saltwater fly fishing, I quickly realized that none of the boats that I had experience with would do the job.
I started my quest for the right boat by listing out my criteria for a “fly fishing friendly boat”.
The list went something like this:
open cockpit; free of high windshields, overly large consoles and seats
stable/ wide casting platforms, fore and aft
adequate storage space for gear and rods
clutter free cockpit, no motor controls cables exposed, retractable mooring gear
dry running in ocean chop and shallow draft for the flats and beach areas
fast yet economical
not too big
priced low
easily trail-able
maintenance friendly
reputable boat builder
well built for the long haul
With my list in hand, I started my search. I quickly realized that every boat I looked into came with too many compromises, until I found Maritime Skiffs.
The design was simple, clean and customizable. The Maritime line consisted of boats ranging in size from 14' up to 23', and with various cockpit options.
I chose the Skiff 18. I was fortunate to locate an 18 that had been factory designed for fly fishing.
The Maritime Skiff 18 met most of my “must have” criteria and I made the purchase in 2000.
I have now completed 5 seasons, fishing the open ocean in seas up to 5’, hugged the rocks at the coastline, cruised in close to breaking surf and drifted the shallow flats. I have had flyrodders fore and aft, chucked hard baits with 3 aboard and chased bluefin on the ocean.
I have mostly been pleased with my Skiff 18, my clients and fishing buddies have also made favorable remarks. However, everyone has their own unique list of criteria, and the Maritime Skiff may not be the right boat for all, but I would strongly recommend a look at their full line of boats.
Over the 5 years I have added equipment and features to improve the fishing experience for myself and clients. The boat design allows for easy modifications and the boat builder is most responsive to helping you achieve exactly what you need with advice and add-on equipment.

Construction-Quality
Maritime Skiff hulls are strengthened internally with an all-fiberglass grid, and fiber-glassed cored transoms for long life and dependable service. The hull is foam filled for safety and has a quiet ride. The cockpit floors are limited lifetime warranted, pressure-treated plywood, covered with three layers of fiberglass. This adds to the hull's stiffness and provides very good screw-holding power for attaching consoles and leaning posts. The backbone of all Maritimes is a unique, pre-cast all-fiberglass grid. It runs full length, dramatically stiffening the hull while supporting the boat's floor. Large 1-1/2" scuppers on all models drain cockpit water directly through the transom. No hoses, clamps, or clogged elbows to worry about.

Performance
Wide chines deflect spray (very dry), improve low speed performance, and improve stability both on and off plane. A deep rugged keel add tremendous strength to the bottom; improve tracking, reduces skidding in turns, and help center the hull on trailers with keel rollers. Self bailing at rest. Open scuppers can be plugged to avoid seawater incursion when backing down or with extra weight on board. Wide waterline beam provides a stable fishing and casting platform, even in chop.
