Line and Leader Review

Gamma Products

Gamma High Performance Co-Polymer Gamma 100% Fluorocarbon Leader
Introduction:
GAMMA has been at the forefront in copolymer filament research and design for over 25 years and is the only company producing a “processed line.” This processing involves patented and proprietary steps that alter the molecular structure of the polymer to produce a line that outperforms the competition. GAMMA high performance line provides the maximum combination of strength, durability, castability, and sensitivity. The built-in suppleness and sensitivity characteristics allow for a more natural presentation for both bait and lures while the fighting capability allows more and bigger fish to be landed. Casting comparison tests confirm that GAMMA high performance line casts smoother and up to 50% further than other leading brands. Whether you fish the tournaments or just for recreation, your time on the water is too valuable to be compromised by your lines performance. Choose GAMMA’s competition grade high performance line and start catching more fish!

Top fishermen worldwide are switching to fluorocarbon leader material. Many of these anglers are finding that the use of GAMMA 100% Fluorocarbon greatly increases their number of hook-ups and number of fish landed. With increasing fishing pressure, many species are becoming more and more line shy. Because this line offers light-refracting qualities nearly identical to water, fish are not spooked and will take lures and baits much more aggressively. In addition, GAMMA 100% Fluorocarbon is the only fluorocarbon line that is "processed" with a proprietary method that makes it not only the most supple fluorocarbon in the world, but also the most "shock resistant". Now anglers can be confident of strong knots and not worry of hook setting break-offs.

Specifications:
High Performance Co-Polymer lines and 100% fluorocarbon leader material are available in a range of sizes and spool quantities.
The Co-Polymer line ranges from 4 lb. test on up to 40 lb., with line diameters as small as 0.08" for the 4 lb. line to 0.024" for the 40 lb.
The 100% Fluorocarbon leader material ranges from 1.5 lb. on up to 80 lb., with diameters as small as 0.004" for the 1.5 lb. to 0.035 for the 80 lb.
Review:
I first became familiar with Gamma products when I owned a fly shop and purchased and displayed Froghair tippet materials. Since then (10 years ago), Gamma Technology has taken quantum leaps in the manufacture of co-polymer and fluorocarbon lines, tippets and leader materials.

Gamma utilizes an exclusive process technology which alters the structure of the material on a molecular level after the filaments have been extruded and drawn, its called “molecular alteration”. Since I am not a chemical engineer or polymer chemist, I don’t profess to understand the process of molecular alteration, but I do know that sportfishing demands that I use the best lines and leaders available to make my task of hooking and landing big tough fish in the shortest period of time easier (their survival depends on it). I was able to fish both products in Florida during February and March, 2006. Both materials stood up well; knot strength, abrasion resistance, sensitivity, cast-a-bility, and hook sets. I have used many brands of lines and leaders over many years of fishing and I can say that Gamma materials are about quality and value. I will continue to use Gamma materials this spring for trout. I expect the freshwater materials to perform equally well as the saltwater products.

Conclusion:
Gamma products are comparatively priced and perform better than most other brands of co-polymer lines and fluorocarbon leader materials on the market. They perform well in “knotting” and show higher residual strength even when an overhand knot is put in the line or leader.
