Fly Line Review
American Angling Gear Guide Review:
Airflo Forty Plus
Reviewer: Captain Skip Montello
Date: August, 2005
Introduction:

Airflo has further developed the Forty Plus series to include the "Cold Saltwater Distance Line". This clear tip intermediate flyline has a 0.5"/second sink rate and a 30'clear head followed with 90' of running line. Each line has a short head for quick loading that is designed to launch large saltwater flies a long way with a minimum of effort. Forty Plus Saltwater lines feature a revolutionary braided core that has almost zero stretch for long range hook sets, but has virtually no memory even on the coldest of days. This heavy duty version of the Forty Plus is equally at home in freshwater when large fish will be encountered.

On the Water:

I loaded the AirFlo 40 plus on my Hayden Barramundi reel and mounted the reel to a 9’ 9 wt med-fast Echo rod. The line handled really well making effortless casts of 70 plus feet were not an issue. The line loaded the rod with just two strokes. Another feature that impressed me was the fact that the line tangled less than I expected with 60' of fly line on the deck. This characteristic is most important when you need to get the fly off the boat deck and out to the fish with as few casting strokes and tangles as possible. The line landed very softly with little surface disruption. This is particularly important when fishing in shallow, clear water with fish feeding near the surface (as was the case when I tested it). The clear head offered a stealthy almost invisible appearance in the clear water. For comparison, I used another, older technology intermediate WF-9I flyline. The 40 plus was far superior in distance (20’ or more), surface quietness, and stealth that added up to more hook-ups per cast.
